Company Profile
American Academy of Pediatrics
Company Overview
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is a membership organization of 67,000 pediatricians and approximately 500 staff committed to the optimal physical, mental, and social health and well-being for all infants, children, adolescents, and young adults. The AAP promotes pediatrics and advances child health priorities by developing policy, conducting research, building coalitions, raising public awareness, funding community-based projects, and supporting training and professional education for our membership.
The mission of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is to attain optimal physical, mental, and social health and well-being for all infants, children, adolescents, and young adults. To accomplish this mission, the AAP shall support the professional needs of its members.
The AAP atmosphere is a business office, not a doctor’s office; and we work on behalf of children, not directly with children. Our two locations consist of our main headquarters located in Itasca, IL with approximately 500 employees, and our satellite location in Washington DC with 20 employees.
Company History
The AAP was founded in June 1930 by 35 pediatricians who met in Detroit in response to the need for an independent pediatric forum to address children's needs. When the AAP was established, the idea that children have special developmental and health needs was a new one. Preventive health practices now associated with child care—such as immunizations and regular health exams—were only just beginning to change the custom of treating children as "miniature adults."
