Company History

About St-Boniface Hospital & Research Centre
St-Boniface Hospital has been providing leadership in health care on behalf of Manitobans since established by the Grey Nuns in 1871. Located at the fork of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers, we were the first hospital in Western Canada, established in St-Boniface as a small four-bed facility to meet the health care needs of the citizens of Manitoba. From these humble beginnings, the Hospital has grown to become one of Canada’s leading patient care, education and research facilities. As a major tertiary care facility affiliated with the University of Manitoba, St-Boniface Hospital is part of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and serves the people of Manitoba, Northwestern Ontario and parts of Saskatchewan.

The Hospital has demonstrated provincial leadership and significant expertise in the areas of Cardiac Sciences, emergency medicine, gastrointestinal disease, neurosciences, palliative care, perinatal care, woman and child, geriatric medicine, mental health, and family medicine. As the second largest hospital in Manitoba, we provide our services through community outreach, ambulatory care programs and inpatient services with our 554 beds. In total, over 4,000 health care professional, research staff and support personnel work at St-Boniface Hospital. More than 1.3 million people pass through the Hospital’s doors each year.

In 1987, St-Boniface Hospital realized one of its proudest accomplishments: creating the first free-standing Research Centre in Western Canada. Since then, the St-Boniface Hospital Research Centre has earned a national and international reputation for ground breaking basic and applied medical research.

St-Boniface is justly proud of its Research Centre. For the second year in a row, Research Infosource Inc, a nationally recognized independent group out of Toronto, recognized St-Boniface Hospital as one of the Top 10 Research Intensive Hospitals in Canada and the only one from Western Canada.
