The mission of the University of Michigan is to serve the people of Michigan and the world through preeminence in creating, communicating, preserving and applying knowledge, art, and academic values, and in developing leaders and citizens who will challenge the present and enrich the future.

Through a donor-centered approach to fundraising, U-M development staff work collegially across the University to build relationships with donors that benefit them and advance Michigan's mission. More than 450 people work in development at Michigan, with approximately 140 in the Office of University Development and the remainder working in the University's 19 schools and colleges and 22 units. At the end of December 2008, U-M completed The Michigan Difference -- the most successful campaign in public higher education history – raising over $3.2 billion! The University of Michigan continues to fundraise and to invest in infrastructure as we plan for the next campaign.
